Help! Assvice Requested.

"Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not watching you."

I have made this statement several times on this blog. And once again it fits what I need to say. For the last few days, I have had some strange pains including the occasional stabbing pain in my vagina, a lot of pressure in my lower abdomen and a persistent low back pain. It seems to be at its worst when I am up and walking around or busy working on my feet. For the first day or so, I wrote this off as just normal aches and pains from an expanding uterus. Yesterday, I started to panic and worry when I noticed that I needed to pee quite a bit and was running to the bathroom from the pressure only to pee a little bit.

So, I called the doctor. Doctor felt that I had a UTI and called in a script. At first, this sounded right given that I seem to be quite vulnerable to UTIs and experience them frequently. But for those of you who have been reading for awhile, another doctor once thought I had interstitial cystitis. So I thought, that could be the culpirt if the UTI wasn't.

But, this morning the paranoia is starting to overwhelm me. First, there is no burning during urination. Then there is that weird lower abdominal heaviness. Finally, there's the knowledge that I have a bicornuate uterus and that can sometimes cause an incompetent cervix. After way too much googling, it seems that an incompetent cervix can produce the same symptoms as a UTI. Sorry to gross everyone out, but I decided to try and feel my cervix myself. The cervix felt slightly open and not as tight as I expected, but then I have no idea what my cervix is supposed to feel like during pregnancy. Then it seemed like the anterior side was soft and the posterior side was firm. And so my efforts to calm myself only made matters worse. For the rest of the day, I am staying reclined on the couch. On Monday, I will call my doctor again and beg to be seen. Even if everything is fine, I think I would feel so much better to hear my doctor say so after a full exam. What do you all think?

Well, nothing is never TMI for me! haha

Seriously, you are probably fine, but yes I think your hunch about the UTI is correct. And seeing your doc about it is a good idea since you really should get a culture done in case you need a different antibiotic.

Other possibilities? That you have retained urine due to a spasm in your urethra. This can happen during UTIs or when any inflammation or pain is present. Take a B complex and some fish oil caps until your Doc can help you otherwise with some antibiotics. The quickie solution is a bit TMI as well, take a warm shower or bath with water running directly near the vagina and then pee when everything feels more relaxed, in the shower if necessary.

You could also have gas or intestinal issues, because guess what's right beside your uterus right now? Take a lot of extra fibre or prune juice, maybe some gas relief pills, and if the pain lessens, you'll have your answer.

I hope some of this helps, let us know what happens tomorrow. Big hugs til then.

seeing the doctor is a good idea. not only that, but nothing else will give you the piece of mind you need. aurelia has much more consice advice than i can offer, but know that i don't think you're over-reacting. keep us updated.

I would definitely call the doc, too. I always thought the burning while peeing was the signature of a UTI, so without that, who knows? Yup, the doctor. Plus, there's the whole peace of mind thing. Definitely call.

I think that given your history, getting checked is a fine idea, and that the doctor should understand that need.

In addition to UTIs or cervical issues, another thing might be an issue - with the bicornuate uterus thing, do you also have a retroverted uterus (flipped backwards?) You're at 15 weeks, that's right when the baby has a huge growth spurt, and a retroverted ute needs to flip up and out of the pelvis. It can start interfering with peeing freely and cause funny cramps and twinges. And then your pelvic ligaments have to start being more load-bearing than they ever have been before.

But you won't know what's up, and more importantly, you won't feel particularly *safe* without getting checked out, I think - and that's what you should do, for your own peace of mind as well as baby's health

I don't want to add to paranoia, but please, get checked, and if your symptoms get worse go to L&D and have someone look down there. When I lost my daughter at 21.5 weeks from incompetent cervix, the only symptom I had, which I didn't realize at the time, were shooting aches in my vagina/cervical area. I thought the baby was just kicking the cervix. Then I started bleeding, and it was too late.

There's likely nothing wrong, but better to have it checked out. If caught early enough, incompetent cervix can be treated with a variety of methods including emergency cerclage, filling the bladder with saline to try to force bulging membranes back in, Trendelenberg position, bedrest, etc.

I hope, hope, hope it's nothing. But better to check and be sure. Good luck, hope I didn't freak you out more but I felt an obligation to comment!

No idea whether you should be worried or not but going to the doctor to get checked out sounds like the best idea to me.

I had a UTI when I was pregnant. Even though you are pregnant you can still get sick and other ailments...this is normal.

Hang in there girl..it is your first baby...its all new to you and this is normal. :)

I'm sure you're probably fine, and everyone else had already chimed in their advice. They're definitely right - get checked out. Do that whenever you want. I'd insist on a transvag.

Thinking of you. Will be waiting for an update.

I say go see the doctor just to be sure. I probably did that 2-3 times while pregnant with A. because I was sure I had an IC. I didn't, but it felt better to know that everything was okay.
It is scary sometimes how much pressure you begin to feel on your cervix as your pregnancy progresses, especially for your first pregnancy. And since you have no frame of reference of course you are going to be scared and think the worst. Eventually you will learn what is "normal" for you to feel. But in the meantime if something doesn't feel right go see your doctor. That is what they are there for.
As for stabbing cervix pains...they are scary too but usually totally normal. As long as they are occasional and there is no consistency to their frequency you are fine. I get them all the time. I even get stabbing pains in my butt as well. My doctor said there are nerve bundles down there that get activated by the weight of the uterus pushing against them or the baby kicking or punching them and they cause weird sensations.
Big hugs to you.

Sounds like the only thing to do is to see the doc. You won't feel better unless you do and that's what's most important..your peace of mind. Hugs!

Better safe than sorry. I would definitely investigate EVERY possibility for safety's sake.

At the same time, the chances are it is nothing to worry about, so try NOT to worry until you know for sure there is something to worry about.

Yeah, I know, easier said than done.

I'm sending healing vibes and prayers your way.

Hmmm, so I'm sure that you've gotten checked out by now.

I can't imagine how nimble you must be in order to feel your own cervix. LOL.
